Victoria Colvin Claims Championships Honors at Capital Challenge Horse Show

Upper Marlboro, Md. – October 11, 2017 – Victoria Colvin is no stranger to the Capital Challenge Horse Show, having competed at the show since she was just a pony kid. Though the young professional has accumulated many top honors at the indoors show, this year was especially rewarding considering Colvin is concluding the week with a new championship accolade on her own horse, Always. Colvin further achieved considerable success in the hunter ring aboard Flint and Airport 48, both owned by John & Stephanie Ingram, LLC, and also competed as a qualifier in the WCHR Professional Finals.

In only his fourth show in the hunter ring, Victoria Colvin, LLC’s Always carried Colvin to the championship tricolors in the Green Hunter 3’6” Section B, sponsored by Lee Sadrian & Cynthia Kellogg. The 5-year-old Oldenburg gelding racked up two first place finishes and a third place spot over fences, as well as a fifth place in the under saddle portion to earn the title.

“All of [Winter Equestrian Festival] he did the 5-Year-Old Jumpers, and he was amazing. He had clear rounds, but I just did that because he seemed like he could be a nice jumper,” commented Colvin. “Our last horse show, I showed him the first week in the jumpers, and the second week we decided to see what he looked like in the hunters. We did him in the 3’3” Performance, and he won every class. Every round he does, he gets better and better. He just turned five. He’s just a baby, and he has one of the best jumps.”

Each year the top 10 nationally ranked riders in each WCHR category, as well as the top six riders from each region are invited to compete in their respective WCHR Challenge at Capital Challenge Horse Show. Up against a field of 29 fellow contenders, Colvin chose her young standout Always to be her mount in the $25,000 WCHR Professional Challenge for which she was qualified. Unphased by the lofty obstacles and stiff competition, Always continued to impress, pulling in scores of 87, 90 and 92 from the judges panel in the classic round. The pair ultimately finished in seventh place overall, a very respectable status considering Always’ lack of experience in the hunter ring. With Colvin’s finish, she solidified her place as one of six finalists in the $5,000 WCHR Professional Finals held later in the week, when she would go head-to-head in the competition against John French, Hunt Tosh, Scott Stewart, Elizabeth Boyd and Tracy Fenney.

In the highlight event, Colvin navigated the Ingram’s Airport 48 in the closely-contested WCHR Professional Finals to a fifth place finish. In the first two rounds of competition, entrants catch ride unfamiliar mounts, and then return for the handy round aboard their own horse, and after the two initial phases, the six riders were separated by only fractions of a point. Colvin put the pressure on in the handy round, earning a score of 94 from the judges panel, but was unable to capture the lead due to a previous score of 81.66, a respectable score in any right. At the conclusion of the class, the six riders were separated by a total of only 10.51 points, with Elizabeth Boyd claiming the victory with her 3-round score of 275, four places ahead of Colvin’s cumulative score of 265.32.

Colvin navigated Flint to the championship title in the Green Hunter 3’3″ division. The towering grey gelding earned a first place finish in the hack and two second place finishes in the over fences classes ahead of some of the industry’s top hunter horses and riders to claim the spot atop the ranks. With his blue ribbon in the hack, Flint qualified for a spot in the $1,000 Professional World Champion Hunter Under Saddle class, where he would finish in an impressive second place position ahead of Green, Conformation, Performance and High Performance Hunter horses.

Following Capital Challenge, Colvin will appear at the Pennsylvania National Horse Show in Harrisburg, Penn., hopeful to earn even more top honors.
