Upperville Colt & Horse Show Announces Esteemed Judges for Inaugural $1,000 Free Jumping Championship at Caliburn Farm

Upperville, Va. – May 10, 2019 – The 2019 Upperville Colt & Horse Show (UCHS), presented by St. Bride’s Farm, is thrilled to announce that world-renowned athletes and trainers André Thieme and Emil Spadone will serve as the judges for the inaugural $1,000 Free Jumping Championship, a new competition taking place at Caliburn Farm on Tuesday, June 4, during the UCHS. Offered to eligible 3- and 4-year-olds, the $1,000 Free Jumping Championship, benefiting the 2019 UCHS, is designed to support the development of young jumpers in North America.

Barb Roux, president of the UCHS, said, “We are excited to have such accomplished and well respected horsemen judge the competition, and we deeply appreciate their support for the Upperville Colt & Horse Show.”

Thieme, who resides in Plau am See, Germany, is one of the country’s leading athletes having competed on more than 30 Nations Cup teams. Thieme was also a member of the gold medal-winning German team in the 2018 BMO Nations Cup at Spruce Meadows. Thieme competes part of the year in the United States, where he has claimed $3 million worth of victories, including two at HITS Saugerties and one at HITS Ocala. In addition, he is a three-time winner of what many consider to be the most difficult jumping competition in the world: the Hamburg Derby.

Owner of Redfield Farm in Califon, New Jersey, and Ocala, Florida, Spadone is one of the largest horse dealers in America. Spadone’s business includes training and coaching, but is most known for its impressive roster of sales graduates. In addition to his show and sales operation, Spadone manages a breeding operation out of his second location in Ocala, Florida.

Spadone is also an owner of HorseFlight, a company that has shipped thousands of horses safely around the world and a proud first-time sponsor of the newly renovated Jumper Ring II at the 2019 UCHS. HorseFlight offers weekly international and domestic flights as well as ground transportation.

Gail Dady, owner of Caliburn Farm, said, “We are extremely fortunate to host these high-caliber judges who understand all aspects of the breeding and development of young horses. We are honored to have them judge the competition and provide their unique insights.”

The $1,000 Free Jumping Championship will take place at Caliburn Farm at 2692 Atoka Road, Marshall, VA 20115, which is located about 10 minutes from the UCHS showgrounds. The 3-year-old class will begin at 2 p.m., while the 4-year-old class will kick-off at 4 p.m. after a short break between classes.

Entries will be limited to the first 30 horses and will close May 15. A champion and reserve champion will be named in each division along with placings through sixth place. Prize money will be awarded for the top three finishers.
