Chris Talley and Sandro’s Star Capture $50,000 Devon Arena Eventing Competition

Devon, Pa. – May 27, 2018 – Sunday night at the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair saw the $50,000 Devon Arena Eventing, presented by Salt Works, take place for the second year in a row, after an extremely successful inaugural year in 2017. The competition utilized both the Dixon Oval and the Wheeler Ring and highlighted two out of three disciplines that make up three-day eventing: cross-country and stadium jumping. Twenty-seven horse-and-rider combinations took to the ring to compete for the title, but it was Chris Talley and Sandro’s Star who ultimately put in two clear rounds to take home the top prize of the evening.

A Taste of Devon

By Veronica J. Finkelstein

Can you imagine sitting at a horse show in your finest dress, wearing white gloves and being served meals from bone china and silver teapots? That’s what spectators would have enjoyed during the Roaring Twenties at the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair. Back then, horse shows were major social events. At Devon, there was a dance floor set up near the ring and an organ grinder provided music. As the American Saddlebreds racked and the hunters jumped, ladies served tea and sandwiches on silver trays.

The tradition continues today, in an updated way, at the Tea Cart, located in the country fair. This is the oldest booth in the entire country fair, and this year it celebrates its 100th anniversary. You can still purchase tea sandwiches (with the crusts cut off) in a variety of flavors including watercress, olive, egg salad and tomato. However, the Tea Cart has also modernized its choices. Enjoy a refreshing cup of gazpacho or a crisp caesar salad. Open for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks, the Tea Cart is a must-stop location for anyone who wants to truly taste the Devon tradition.

No trip to Devon would be complete without a classic lemon stick, which can be purchased at the candy booth in the country fair. The lemon stick has an interesting regional history. Apparently, it became a tradition in both the Philadelphia and Baltimore areas around the early 1900s. In both areas, a fresh lemon was cut open and a porous candy straw was pushed in, allowing the lemon’s juices to be sucked through the straw. In the Baltimore area, the stick was mint flavored. In the Philadelphia area, including at Devon, the stick was lemon flavored. No trip to Devon would be complete without sampling this long-running tradition!

The Devon Horse Show and Country Fair is the longest running and largest outdoor multi-breed competition in the United States. With the grandeur of Philadelphia’s prestigious Main Line setting the stage, the event features a world-class field that annually ranks among the most prominent internationally. The event also includes the country fair, which benefits Bryn Mawr Hospital and has donated over $14 million to date. The country fair offers world-class shopping, rides, games, multiple dining options and special entertainment events.
