Wellington, Fla. – Jan. 16, 2018 – Rood & Riddle is excited to host Cocktails & Conversations at one of Wellington’s premier private country clubs, The Wanderers Club. The event will be held on February 6, 2018 at 6 p.m. with an array of cocktails and h’ordeuvres being served. Cocktails & Conversations, which is a change of venue and time for a previously scheduled Lunch and Learn event, will feature five distinguished veterinary specialists from Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital to chat with guests about various topics concerning equine veterinary medicine.
Dr. Jose Bras, DVM, MS, DACVS, will kick off the evening by discussing Colic: Diagnosis and Surgical Decisions. Dr. Bras completed an in-hospital internship at Rood & Riddle in Lexington, KY, and then a surgical residency at Kansas State University (KSU). In addition, he earned a Master’s degree of Science in Biomedical Science while at KSU. He became a full-time Rood & Riddle team member in 2015 and now heads up the surgery department at Rood & Riddle in Wellington.
Dr. John Hubbell, DVM, MS, ACVAA directs the anesthesia service at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky and is responsible for training all Rood & Riddle team members that perform anesthesia at any of the three practices; Lexington, KY, Saratoga Springs, NY and Wellington, FL. Dr. Hubbell will be discussing the Demystification of Anesthesia for the events attendees. Dr. Hubbell has consulted at Rood & Riddle since the facility was established in 1986 and joined the staff on a full time basis in July of 2015. He is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia and has spent his entire veterinary career focused on anesthesia with a particular interest in the horse. He became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia in 1982, was a faculty member at the College of Veterinary at Ohio State for 33 years and currently holds the rank of Professor Emeritus. Dr. Hubbell has co-edited and co-written two widely read books on anesthesia, Handbook of Veterinary Anesthesia, currently in its 5th edition, and Equine Anesthesia, Monitoring and Emergency Therapy, currently in its 2nd edition. An author of over 75 scientific publications, Dr. Hubbell is a frequent speaker on the topic of equine anesthesia, including presentations at the annual meetings of the American Association of Equine Practitioners and the Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society.
Third in the evenings roster will be Dr. Steve Reed, who will discuss the Diagnosis and Treatment of EPM (equine protozoal myeloencephalitis). Dr. Reed earned his DVM at The Ohio State University, followed by a residency at Michigan State University. He started his academic teaching career at Washington State University from 1979-1983, and then returned to The Ohio State University where he spent 26 years as a professor and mentor in the Equine Medicine department. Dr. Reed is a Diplomate in the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and is a noted author and editor of numerous scientific articles and textbooks. He has spoken at many state, national and international meetings. His primary research interests include Equine Neurologic Diseases. He is currently an Internal Medicine Specialist and shareholder of the Practice at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital, Emeritus Professor of The Ohio State University, an Adjunct Professor at the University of Kentucky and is currently the Chairman of the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Advisory Committee.
International Equine Veterinarian Hall of Fame member Dr. Raul Bras, DVM, CJF, APF, a shareholder at Rood & Riddle, will be sharing Therapeutic Shoeing for the Performance Horse. Dr. Bras serves as a veterinary podiatrist based out of the Rood & Riddle Lexington campus. He routinely schedules appointments in Wellington and across the United States. In 2010 he also became a Certified Journeyman Farrier of the American Farriers Association after completing the farrier program at Cornell University.
The newest member of the Rood & Riddle Wellington team, Dr. Stephanie Walbornn, DVM, DACT, will conclude the evening with the topic of Assisted Reproductive Techniques in the Horse. As a diplomate of the American College of Theriogenologists, Dr. Walbornn has made the Rood & Riddle name a top provider of a variety of advanced reproductive techniques including embryo flushing, oocyte aspiration, semen collection and evaluation, and more.
