Harold Frey Family Donates Special Awards for $5,000 Johnson Horse Transportation USHJA National Hunter Derby at 2017 BIHS

Buffalo, N.Y. – Aug. 30, 2017 – The Buffalo International Horse Show (BIHS) is set to host its 71st annual hunter/jumper competition this fall at the Buffalo Therapeutic Riding Center (BTRC). The show will be held from Sept. 13–17, and will not only offer top tier competition, but will also act as the largest fundraiser of the year for the BTRC.

The BIHS recognizes that without continued generosity and support of its sponsors, many of whom have sponsored the historic event for multiple years, the BIHS would not be where it is today as one of the top horse shows in the nation.

“We are so fortunate to have the support of our local community as well as the equestrian industry,” said Susie Schoellkopf, executive director of the BTRC.

The $5,000 Johnson Horse Transportation USHJA National Hunter Derby, one of the most prestigious classes in the competition, will be Saturday’s featured event and the class will award eight overall ribbons. To the leading rider, the Harold Frey family have generously donated $1,000 and $500 to the leading groom. The leading rider will also win the Russell Frey Leading Rider trophy, donated by the Harold Frey family.

The BIHS is a AA rated hunter/jumper show and offers excellent preparation for horses and riders who will be competing at indoor finals this fall as the facility features one of the largest indoor riding arenas in the nation. The show is known for having great prize money and promising competition, and will kick off on Wednesday, Sept. 13, with a number of professional hunter divisions. The second day of competition includes the amateur-owner hunter divisions as well as the always-popular $1,000 Phelps Media Group Grooms Class and the $1,500 USHJA 3′ and 3’3″ Green Incentive.

On Friday, keep an eye out for the $1,000 “The Full Monty” Amateur-Owner 3’6″ Hunter Classic and the $1,000 Up The Creek Amateur-Owner 3’3″ Hunter Classic. The ASPCA Maclay, USEF/Pessoa Hunter Seat Medal and WIHS Jumper Phase will also take place on Friday afternoon. At 5:45 p.m., the BTRC will put on a demonstration where students will have a chance to show off what they’ve learned throughout the year. The demonstration is sponsored by Up The Creek Farm, a long-standing supporter of the BTRC and the BIHS.

Saturday’s schedule highlights adult amateur, pony and junior hunter classics, in addition to jumper classics in the afternoon, leading up to the highly anticipated $5,000 Johnson Horse Transportation USHJA National Hunter Derby.

The show concludes on Sunday, Sept. 17, with a number of junior hunter and children’s pony hunter divisions. The show finishes with the $500 Johnson Horse Transportation Silver Stirrup Classic, a two-round competition to be judged on the performance of the horse or pony.
