Ashley Friedland and Bailey Fuller Capture Jumper Classic Wins in Temecula

Temecula, Calif. – May 26, 2019 – The Temecula Valley National Horse Show II concluded Sunday with its final day of jumper competition taking place, and a series of prize money offerings kept horse-and-rider pairs in the ring one final time for a chance to wrap up the week on a high note. Leading the class from start to finish, Ashley Friedland and Dynamic set a pace that could not be beaten in the $2,500 EquiFit Junior/Amateur-Owner 1.25m Jumper Classic, riding away with the victory virtually uncontested. Also in the Audi Grand Prix Ring, presented by Evergate Stables, Bailey Fuller and Belladonna captured the top spot on the leaderboard in the $2,500 Kenilworth Stables 1.20m Jumper Classic to finish as one of the day’s big winners.

Ashley Friedland and Dynamic

As the first pair in the ring for the $2,500 EquiFit Junior/Amateur-Owner 1.25m Jumper Classic, Friedland and her own Dynamic masterfully wound their way through course designer Anderson Lima’s (BRA) 15-effort track, turning in a foot-perfect trip to advance to the immediate jump-off. Though the duo did not have the advantage of watching any of their competitors ride the abridged course beforehand, Friedland and Dynamic maneuvered an efficient route and left all the fences upright, breaking the beam in a fast 33.044 seconds to set the standard.

Chasing after the frontrunners’ pace, ten future horse-and-rider combinations earned a ride in the jump-off thanks to successful first trips within the time-allowed, but none were able to catch the quick and careful effort of Friedland and Dynamic, who would come away with the win in the $2,500 EquiFit Junior/Amateur-Owner 1.25m Jumper Classic. Nearing the end of the pack, owner-rider Carson Wayte and Cantato BF came the closest, stopping the clock just over one half of a second too late in 33.680 seconds, and Annelyse Tycholis aboard Cheryl Tycholis’ Apache rounded out the top three with their double-clean time of 37.379 seconds, the third of only four pair to complete two penalty-free rides.

In the $2,500 Kenilworth Stables 1.20m Jumper Classic, exhibitors braved the rain for a shot at the top prize, with Femke Courchaine and Inferno BF leading the way as the first pair to turn in a clear trip. After finishing the first pattern fault-free, the duo stayed in the ring for their jump-off effort over Lima’s 8-fence jump-off track, navigating their way to a short course time of 37.081 seconds with two unfortunate rails down to set the early pace. Their reign wouldn’t last long though, as Susan Artes and Quentin Va soon laid down the first double-clean performance of the class to the tune of a 37.402-second jump-off finish, propelling them to the top spot. Improving upon their counterparts’ time even further, Bailey Fuller and Belladonna ensured that the lead changed hands with their quick and careful turn around the ring, clocking in cleanly at 35.654 seconds, nearly two full seconds ahead of Artes and Quentin Va’s earlier leading time.

Bailey Fuller and Belladonna

With only a handful of partnerships left to ride, Fuller and Belladonna retained their status at the head of the leaderboard as pair after pair aimed and failed to surpass them. Though Sara Durrer and Evita Du Vert Vallon galloped to an incredibly fast time of 31.956 seconds, they finished on a heartbreaker as the final fence fell to earn 4 faults against them. The last pair to finish a clear first ride, Veronica Savery and Lexica were the final contenders with a chance to usurp Fuller and Belladonna, but ultimately couldn’t catch them, solidifying Fuller and Belladonna as the $2,500 Kenilworth Stables 1.20m Jumper Classic champions.

Sunday’s competition concludes the third week of the Temecula Valley National Horse Show at Galway Downs, but the fourth and final week will begin at Galway Downs on Wednesday, May 29 and conclude Sunday, June 2.

FROM THE WINNER’S CIRCLE

Ashley Friedland – $2,500 Junior/Amateur-Owner 1.25m Jumper Classic winner

On her horse:
“His name is Dynamic and he is 11 years old. I’ve had him for almost three years and he is perfect. He was supposed to be my 1.40m horse but he doesn’t quite have the scope, so we put him between the 1.35m and the 1.20m just to keep him confident. From start to finish he has always been the best horse in the world and he is very consistent.”

On her ride in the class:
“We were first into the ring, and he is just really quick so I got to go in there and have some fun. That was the whole goal. There was a rollback from fence five to fence 8 that was pretty quick, and that was most of [where we cut time in the jump-off.]”

On the Temecula Valley National Horse Show:
“It’s my first time, and it’s beautiful here. It’s my favorite show I’ve been to in California. We will be here next week. It feels European here. We just came off of the Winter Equestrian Festival earlier in the year, and it was a good alternative to Spruce Meadows.”
