It’s Not Too Late to Join Us for Ladies Day

By Veronica J. Finkelstein

Tomorrow is one of the signature social events of the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair — and you’re invited! Grab your fancy heels, a gorgeous frock and, most importantly, a fabulous hat and join us for Ladies Day. This year’s event will take place on Wednesday, May 30, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tickets may be purchased online for $65 here. The cost to attend will be $80 if tickets are purchased at the door.

The festivities start in the Devon Pavilion with the hat contest judged by a panel of celebrity judges including Emmy Award-winning actress Kim Delaney; 6abc meteorologist Adam Joseph; author of FashionattheRaces.com Bri Mott; SAVVY/Main Line editor Caroline O’Halloran; Marni Manko from Philadelphia Style; Sandy Ross, a Baldwin School parent; Katherine Del Raso from JP Morgan; and Brenda Waites Bolling of Brenda Waites Bolling Millinery Boutique. Following the contest, all of the ladies are invited to a reception with hor d’oeuvres and cocktails. Ladies Day is sponsored by Brightview Senior Living, Springton Tennis Club, the Baldwin School, Anthropologie, Barbara Brodsky Comprehensive Breast Center and Polka Dots. Don your finest chapeau, bring your friends and experience a true Devon tradition!

The focus will be on the ladies in the ring as well, with the Ladies Side Saddle division taking over the Dixon Oval at noon. Side saddle riders use a special saddle and equipment that allow them to ride with both legs on one side of the horse. Side saddle riding was invented as a necessity during periods of history when women were not permitted to wear pants. Like all hunter classes, side saddle classes are judged on the manners and performance of the horse. Unlike other classes, turnout is more critical. The rider may be judged on the suitability of her clothing and saddle, which are often actual antique pieces that have been preserved for decades.

Devon spectators will be treated to a special slice of history during these classes, with live commentary provided on USEF Network by Devon Zebrovious. Zebrovious was the US Equestrian national champion in 2013, 2014 and 2015 in the Ladies Side Saddle division and has represented the Middleburg Hunt at the Virginia Field Hunter Championships eight times. The Devon Horse Show and Country Fair is the longest running and largest outdoor multi-breed competition in the United States. With the grandeur of Philadelphia’s prestigious Main Line setting the stage, the event features a world-class field that annually ranks among the most prominent internationally. The event also includes the country fair, which benefits Bryn Mawr Hospital and has donated over $14 million to date. The country fair offers world-class shopping, rides, games, multiple dining options and special entertainment events.
