Wellington, FL- August 21, 2012- Phelps Media Group International is pleased to announce that the resource for horse-owners and veterinarians, Norton Veterinary Consulting and Education Resources, has joined the clients roster.
“I am thrilled to have such an important equine educational resource join our family of clients,” said Mason Phelps, Jr., President of Phelps Media Group. “There is so much value in Dr. Norton’s courses and services. The equestrian audience and their much beloved equine partners are certain to benefit from this great organization.”
Joan Norton, VMD, DACVIM, a life-long horse enthusiast, hails from the Northeastern United States. As a child and a young adult, Dr. Norton competed in the pony and junior hunters with trainer Carol Thompson. While attending Kent School in Kent, CT, she trained with Olympian Michael Page and spent her summers competing in the junior jumpers as a working student on the A-circuit with trainer Bert Mutch. Highlights of her equestrian career include championships at Lake Placid, Pony Finals and the Washington International Horse Show.
With a penchant for math and science, Dr. Norton’s career path was clear from an early age. She received her undergraduate degree with high distinction in Biotechnology at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts then launched into her veterinary education at the University of Pennsylvania, where she graduated with an Award of Excellence in Large Animal Medicine. She completed an internship at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, KY, where she trained in medicine, surgery and anesthesia. Then, Dr. Norton returned to the University of Pennsylvania for a three-year residency where she received her board certification and was named a diplomat of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM).
Dr. Norton developed and taught a hugely popular series of client education courses while working for Janssen Veterinary Clinic in Sheridan, IN. Her passion for education became evident and the response to the series was overwhelming.
Dr. Norton founded Norton Veterinary Consulting and Education Resources to promote equine veterinary education to both horse owners and veterinarians.
“My goal is to use my education to help people, both horse-owners and veterinarians, improve the healthcare of horses,” said Dr. Norton. “After all, the more we know about our horses, the better equipped we will be to provide them with happy and healthy lives.“
In addition to education on both general and focused topics, Norton Veterinary Consulting and Education Resources offers case-by-case equine and large animal internal medicine consultations for veterinarians to review blood work, ultrasounds, x-rays, research topics and/or supply the latest, up-to-date information to help diagnose and manage challenging or mysterious cases.
Dr. Norton is the author of Equine First Aid Handbook, a useful pocket-sized book, perfect to tuck into the trunk at the barn, which contains must-have information on how to recognize and handle common equine emergencies.
