Black Watch, BTA Debut With Wins In 22-Goal Ylvisaker Cup at International Polo Club Palm Beach
WELLINGTON, FL (February 3, 2007) – Ten-goaler Facundo Pieres scored nine goals and Black Watch withstood a furious comeback to defeat Skeeterville 14-13 in the 22-goal Ylvisaker Cup presented by Cartier Saturday at International Polo Club Palm Beach.
In another game, 8-goaler Jeff Hall scored seven goals to spark BTA past Bendabout 11-9.
It was the season debut for both Black Watch and BTA.
Black Watch took control from the outset, running to an 8-4 lead as Pieres scored six goals. Black Watch kept the lead at four goals, 13-9, heading into the final chukker.
Pieres scored on a breakaway with 5:29 left in the game to push the margin to five goals before Skeeterville, the 2006 Ylvisaker Cup runner-up, began its frantic comeback. They scored four goals in a 2:33 span, three by 8-goaler Julio Arellano, to cut the margin to 14-13 with 1:40 remaining. Arellano’s last goal came on a tap-in following Owen Rinehart’s 130-yard pass from midfield.
On the ensuing series, Nacho Figueras of Black Watch missed a shot with 46 seconds left, giving Skeeterville one more chance to tie the game. With 26 seconds left, Rinehart began dribbling downfield, but Figueras backed the ball to the boards near the 60-yard line and time ran out before Skeeterville could get off a shot.
The game also marked the U.S. debut of 5-goaler Nicolas Pieres, the 16-year-old brother of Facundo, who was playing in his first game as a 10-goaler in the U.S. Nicolas Pieres scored four goals, three in the second half.
The loss eliminated Skeeterville from playoff contention. Arellano led Skeeterville (0-2) with seven goals, Rinehart had four goals and patron Skeeter Johnston and Stevie Orthwein Jr. added one goal each.
BTA led 7-5 at halftime but Alejandro Novillo Astrada’s back shot with 3:01 left in the fourth chukker cut the margin to 7-6. Bendabout never tied the game in the second half.
Fred Mannix Jr. added two goals and Daniel Roenisch scored one goal for BTA (1-0) while patron Kelly Beal did not score.
The loss eliminated Bendabout from playoff contention. Ten-goaler Miguel Novillo Astrada and 7-goaler Alejandro Novillo Astrada led Bendabout (0-2) with four goals apiece while patron Gillian Johnston scored one goal. Will Johnston did not score.
The tournament continues Sunday with a tripleheader beginning at 10 a.m. when Lechuza Caracas (0-0) plays Patagones (0-1) followed by Pony Express (0-1) against Broncos (0-1) at 1 p.m. and culminating with New Bridge La Dolfina (1-0) against Audi (1-0) at 3 p.m. The final of the Ylvisaker Cup presented by Cartier is scheduled for Sunday, February 18 at 3 p.m. on Stanford Field.
The Ylvisaker Cup in named in honor of William T. “Bill” Ylvisaker, a polo pioneer who founded Palm Beach Polo and Country Club in the late 1970s, bringing the sport to the forefront in Palm Beach County.
