Devon, Pa. – April 27, 2017 – As the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair approaches, qualified hunter riders prepare to take center stage in the Dixon Oval, where top professionals, amateurs and juniors will vie for coveted championship titles. The highlight event will be the $25,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby, scheduled to be held on Thursday, June 1st at 12:30 PM and will bring together the country’s best athletes.
Sponsored by the Wheeler family, this year’s derby will be dedicated to the legendary Kenneth and Sallie Wheeler. Mrs. Wheeler, an Anheuser-Busch heiress and lifelong equestrian, passed in 2001. The couple was synonymous in the national equestrian scene with sportsmanship, having ridden and trained top hunters and Saddle horses.
Last year it was none other than Liza Boyd aboard Pony Lane Farms’ Like I Said who easily won the derby class with a total combined score of 391.5,12.5 points ahead of second place combination Sandy Ferrell and Fifty Shades.
“For me, I always like to be the underdog,” Boyd said of her 2016 win. “I don’t mind going back a little low. These derbies are my passion. I absolutely love these, and I love the handy rounds. I love the excitement of it. Like I Said is a great mare. A good mare has a lot of desire, and that mare just dug deep and tried really hard for me. I just try to stay out of her way and just go forward. She’s a little bit like an old fashioned hunter. I think she has a little bit more of a Thoroughbred-type of way of going.”
This year competitors will navigate a classic and handy round designed by Allen Rheinheimer for a chance at the prize money. Hunter Judges include Rick Fancher, Chris Wynne, Bob Crandall, and Bobbie Reber.
Aside from the highlighted hunter derby, pony, junior, and amateur-owner hunters will compete for prestigious championships during the Devon Horse Show. There will be a $37,500 Pony Hunter section, a $50,000 Junior Hunter section, and a $39,000 Amateur-Owner Hunter section for qualified athletes to showcase their mounts.

Follow I-95 South. Look for I-476 approximately 5 miles South of the Philadelphia

Follow I-95 North toward Philadelphia. Once you’ve crossed into Delaware, keep right and take I-495 North via exit 5D toward Port of Wilmington / Philadelphia. Follow for I-495 North and merge onto I-95 North (Crossing into Pennsylvania). Follow I-95 North to I-476 North. Take I-476 N via exit 7 toward Plymouth Meeting. Follow I-476 North for approximately 13 miles to exit 13, US-30. Turn left onto US-30 West. Follow US-30 West for approximately 3 miles and the Devon Horse Show will be on your left.
From the East
Follow the Schuylkill Expressway / I-76 West to I-476 South. Merge onto I-476 South via exit 331A on the left toward Chester. Follow I-476 South for approximately 2 miles to exit 13, US-30. Turn left onto US-30 West. Follow US-30 West for approximately 3 miles and the Devon Horse Show will be on your left.
From the West
Follow the Pennsylvania Turnpike / I-76 E toward Philadelphia. Take exit 326 toward Valley Forge. Stay in right lane after the tolls. Merge onto US-202 South via exit 328A toward West Chester. Follow US-202 South for approximately 2 miles. Take the PA-252 North exit toward Devon. Make a left onto Valley Forge Road / PA-252. Continue to follow Valley Forge Road for approximately .5 miles and make a slight right turn onto Devon State Road. Follow Devon State road for approximately 1 mile until you reach a dead end. Make a left onto Old Lancaster Road and then an immediate right onto Waterloo Road. Turn left on to Lancaster Avenue / US-30 East and the Devon Horse Show will be on your right within .2 miles.
