The project originally was conceived in 1999. Tim Farley, the son of the author of THE BLACK STALLION books, Walter Farley, (www.theblackstallion.com) and Mark Miller, owner of Arabian Nights Dinner Attraction (www.arabian-nights.com) in Kissimmee, Florida, were friends for more than 30 years and shared a common interest in encouraging children to read. Tim knew the influence his father’s books have had on millions of children and Mark grew up (and remains) in the company of horses, so together they were (and are) a winning combination for a program designed to motivate children to read. Since The Black Stallion Literacy Foundation (BSLF) began serving children in 2000, more than 600,000 children across the United States have participated in the reading programs.

Through the magnificence of the human and horse relationship, the kids are taught about responsibility and confidence. Our first goal is to maintain the kids' physical safety while allowing the kids and horses to work their healing magic together. Every weekend groups of kids meet at one of the local sponsor barns. During the 2-hour session, the kids learn how to groom and tack a horse, followed by a 15 minute private riding lesson. While the kids take turns riding, the other participants are led by a volunteer facilitator through a curriculum written and published by American Humane Association entitled, "Healing Together." This curriculum is written by Donna Sue Spear, MA., LPC., NCACII.

An accomplished competitor, Flettrich has earned his United States Dressage Federation (USDF) Silver and Gold Medals. He is also a graduate of the USDF ‘L’ (Learner) Judge Program. Currently competing in Europe, Flettrich will make his bid in Florida this winter for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games Selection Trials.
